Improving the safety of food redistribution through the Internet of Things

Monmouth Community Fridge is a volunteer group who redistribute nutritious, surplus food from local businesses to help prevent food waste in Monmouth. Based on the same site as Mockingbird Consulting’s office and with such a great cause at the heart of it, we couldn’t wait to help remove some of the more mundane tasks for the volunteers and improve food safety at the same time. The Community Fridge(s) The setup consists of three fridges and a freezer unit, and the existing setup had a number of digital thermometers that would be read and recorded by the volunteers twice a day.

When Brook House Farm in Bromyard were looking for a way to monitor their hops more effectively, they turned to Mockingbird Consulting for help. Our team met with farm owner Will and his agronomist Davide, and talked with them about the challenges they faced. It was clear that monitoring the weather and soil conditions and correlating those measurements would play a vital part in the project, so we undertook a full market analysis to find the most appropriate sensors for the task.

Helping rural businesses to connect more effectively

FCE (Wales) are one of the leading Principal Contract firms in South Wales and the South West of the UK. Based in the Vale of Usk in Wales, the remote location of the FCE (Wales) office means that currently Superfast Broadband is not available. Mockingbird Consulting were approached by our CCTV and Security partners Netfit Communications to assist in stabilising the existing rural broadband connection in order to ensure footage and alerts could be transmitted to the property owners, as well as providing other buildings on the property with the ability to stream digital services such as BBC iPlayer and Netflix.

Making better wine with the Internet of Things

When JoTo Systems were asked by a collective of local vineyards in Coonwarra, Australia to maintain the vineyard monitoring solution that was in place, their founder Tony Smith found a solution that was in serious need of an update Tony explained “We were given a number of arduinos and SD-cards, some of which were seriously water damaged. We had to drive 4 hours each way once a month to collect the data from the SD cards and then provide the analysis back to the vineyards in a format which was easy for them to understand.
